Oral Systemic Care
The Mouth Body Connection
Oral systemic care is one of the hottest and most exciting areas of study and discovery. Put simply, your dental health not only affects your smile, but your overall health as well, making healthy teeth and gums more important than ever.
Oral DNA Testing
Oral DNA Testing - Are you at risk? Oral DNA testing helps us identify the exact types of bacteria present in your mouth and also to see if you are genetically susceptible to developing periodontal disease or tooth decay. By identifying the specific type of bacteria present in your mouth, we can target it with selected antimicrobial therapy.
The test is performed using a saliva sample that is easy and fast to collect.
Oral HPV Testing
Oral HPV Testing - Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is one of the most common virus groups in the world. According to the centers of disease control, at least 20 million people in the U.S. are infected with HPV.
The OraRisk Oral HPV test is non-invasive and an easy to use screening tool to identify the type(s) of oral HPV, a mucosal viral infection that could potentially lead to cancer. Testing enables us to establish increased risk for oral cancer and determine appropriate referral and monitoring of the condition.
Halitosis
Halitosis - Bad Breath can indicate a serious problem.
Over 90 million people struggle with chronic bad breath! For most it is caused by high levels of bacteria in the mouth, that form colonies under the gum line, between the teeth, and between the taste buds on the tongue.
The bacteria that cause bad breath also do damage to the gums and jawbone, which is known as gum disease. Bad breath can also stem from other general health situations: internal infections, diabetes, kidney failure, liver malfunction, and dry mouth caused by aging, medications, mouth breathing or chemotherapy. Regardless of the cause, bad breath is treatable! There are numerous rinses, toothpastes, and devices available to treat the condition ,and a thorough dental cleaning may be advised as well. The first step would be to call the office for an evaluation; from there we can help you have fresh breath.
Supplements
Supplements - In order to achieve enhanced, long lasting, oral wellness and longevity of dental treatment, a systemic (nutritional) support may also be recommended as part of the “home care” program. Often time it has become evident that oxidative stress, high cell turnover and poor nutrition are major issues contributing to periodontal disease. In addition, the nutritional needs of the oral cavity increase when recovering from dental treatment. So in order to maintain good oral health, Dr. Minadeo-Fox and her hygienist may recommend a dental nutraceutical.

Snoring and Sleep Apnea Evaluation
Snoring and Sleep Apnea Evaluation - Snoring and Chronic Sleepiness may be a sign of a serious health problem. Your snoring is more than just annoying to your spouse. Studies indicate that snoring costs your bed partner up to two hours of sleep each night: additionally, it has been linked to a number of serious health conditions including heart disease and stroke. Moreover, the louder you snore the worse off you may be.
Louder snoring can be an indication of more severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea, when the rear of the throat collapses blocking the airway. The result is daytime sleepiness ,caused by poor quality sleep, which places a significant strain on the body, relationships and also job performance.
Sleep apnea can be managed and we can help! We will partner with your physician to administer a simple sleep study test for you. Together we will evaluate you for the treatment of choice to improve your quality of life, whether it be a lifestyle change, an oral appliance or a CPAP machine.
Stopped using your CPAP machine? The good news is that now there are other options such oral appliance therapy, an alternative treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Ask us how we can help you with treatment options.
